  • Idiots guide to making terrain #3: Fences

Posted on November 14th, 2004 Rob No comments

As you have seen from my previous articles, there is no right or wrong way to make terrain. While I am morally offended by the "book under the tablecloth" hill, anything you do that forwards your gaming table is a positive step. Today I have concocted a relatively simple formula for making durable and attractive wooden fences, using very little in the way of materials. Again, this isnt the only way to make them, just the one I will teach you for now (future articles will detail brick walls and chainlink fences.)

  • Getting RPG adventures back on track

Posted on November 13th, 2004 Rob No comments

    A Confession

I have long been in the habit of writing just enough of an adventure to get through the next session or two. Thus, if I got really busy with work, I was likely to be unprepared for a game session.

That situation wasnt usually so bad, but what made it worse this time was that for several weeks in a row I had simply forgotten to bring the adventure with me. Even if I was prepared (and for the first several sessions I was), the notes on my hard drive did me no good when I was gaming in another location.

Fans of The Lord of the Rings may be interested to know that a remote Indonesian island has yielded the remains of pint-size people, a surprising new human species that paleontologists say lived just 18,000 years ago.

  • Wee Warfare in Tampa

It was Hurricon 2004 at the Comfort Inn Conference Center in Tampa, where the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society-South marshalled 200 hobbyists to make toy war on tabletop battlegrounds, one of two Armageddon's scheduled each year

That Saturday afternoon got mighty bloody.

Roman legions marched on a palisade of barbarian Gauls. British ships cannonaded a Spanish port in the islands. A hundred regiments of Union and Confederate forces were locked in combat. A serial killer named Jack stalked London streets. Mobs and hobbits raised havoc in a village Thomas Kinkade would love.

That was just in one room

    Breaking news on Starship Troopers…

Games Workshop and Warhammer 40,000 supremo, Andy Chambers, has recently agreed to join the Starship Troopers development team as lead designer, bringing his vast experience to what will be the hottest science fiction wargame of 2005.

Andy has already made his presence felt with a complete shake up of the Starship Troopers system, resulting in a game that is quick to learn, fast to play, and yet retains all the detail and crunch that players look for in a long term wargame. Andys preliminnary work on the background behind the Starship Troopers wargame and RPG has also started to pay dividends as we explore Heinleins galaxy and the nature of both the Citizens Federation and the Mobile Infantry.

I bought this, and it rocks!!

Fact: the bases on the figs are the exact same size as the D&D miniatures bases. Hasbro owns both companies. Do I smell crossover??

The game has an awesome modular gameboard, which you can set up to match a specific scenario, or make your own. Multiple sets can be combined, and expansions are planned, possibly with characters being sold randomly in sealed packages (i don't know that for a fact, but it makes sense…)

  • Battle Summary: Lions vs Goblins

Posted on September 9th, 2004 Rob No comments

My buddy Steve and my Cousin Chris have shown a lot of interest in learning how to play Confrontation recently. I invited them to my LGS on Saturday, August 28th to teach them how to play. Unfortunately, only my Cousin showed up on Saturday. Steve had got in a car accident the night before. He bruised his ribs but other than that he's ok. But obviously he was in no shape to play Confrontation at Millennium.

  • Battle Summary: Orcs vs Goblins

Posted on September 8th, 2004 Rob No comments

Here's another Confrontation battle summary. The fight took place on Wednesday, August 25th at Millennium Games here in Rochester, NY. My opponent was Carter Brent, as usual.

    To quickly summarize the evening…

I bought the Goblin Pirates box set at the Millennium Garage Sale a few weeks back. I had based about 100AP of Gobs, including a Gas-Blower and 3 Ball & Chains that I had picked up as well that afternoon. We played a 100AP King of the Hill scenario: Goblins VS Orcs.

  • Battle Summary: Lions vs Devourers

Posted on September 7th, 2004 Rob No comments

After having played my first game of Confrontation last week, Carter Brent and I decided to make Wednesday night Confrontation night at our LGS. Our goal is to invite people to play and introduce Confrontation to a bunch of new folk. We heard that a guy named Dan was coming to learn how to play but he wasn't around at first so we decided to get started without him.

Carter and I started a 300AP game with Magicians to practice the Incantation rules. Carter brought his Devourers to do battle against my Lions. Migail the Selenite was my Magician choice while Carter used his newly acquired Velrys, Prince of the Impure; whom I can only describe as a magic wielding, half-elven samurai bad-ass.
