The latest security risk – Dungeons & Dragons
Security vetting gone mad or perfect sense?

    By John E. Dunn, Techworld

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have sent a clear message to would-be recruits who like playing fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons – don't bother applying.

The IDF is noted for its careful vetting, through training and attention to psychological profiling based on decades of battlefield experience, and it seems that role-playing Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) players don't make the grade in a number of ways.

    Painted Armies, Tabletop Battles
    By JULIE SALAMON

    Published: February 15, 2005

HOUSTON – At 6 feet 4 inches, with a shaved head and a spiky beard, Adam Floyd, 21, may seem fierce and freaky. Wearing a black T-shirt that says "Storm of Chaos," he is exactly the type you might expect to find at a competition for a fantasy game involving military strategy, in which the goal is to annihilate an opponents army.

But hold those preconceptions. Mr. Floyd is not in a dark, forbidding gaming store, but at the bright, expansive indoor visitors plaza at NASAs Johnson Space Center here. The 70 fighters gathered for a tournament last month also included Chris Goodchild, a cherubic 12-year-old, and Carl Bellatti, 54, a grandfather and middle school band teacher in Houston, as well as computer programmers, lawyers, prison guards, an all-state football player from Texas, a substantial smattering of adolescent boys and one woman.

    NEW FANATIC Q&A
    By Jervis Johnson

As I announced a couple of weeks ago, Fanatic support for the Specialist Game Range will be moving primarily online in the New Year. At the time I wasn’t able to be very specific about exactly how the new Fanatic operation would work, as we were still ironing out the details of how the department would be set up. I’m happy to say that I’m now in a position to answer many of the questions I have received about how Fanatic will support the Specialist Games Range in the future. So, without more ado, here are the answers to those questions!

    Breaking news on Starship Troopers…

Games Workshop and Warhammer 40,000 supremo, Andy Chambers, has recently agreed to join the Starship Troopers development team as lead designer, bringing his vast experience to what will be the hottest science fiction wargame of 2005.

Andy has already made his presence felt with a complete shake up of the Starship Troopers system, resulting in a game that is quick to learn, fast to play, and yet retains all the detail and crunch that players look for in a long term wargame. Andys preliminnary work on the background behind the Starship Troopers wargame and RPG has also started to pay dividends as we explore Heinleins galaxy and the nature of both the Citizens Federation and the Mobile Infantry.

Fans of science fiction, anime, comics and medieval weaponry were wondering yesterday why one of the longest-running and most popular booths at the Canadian Comic Book Expo had disappeared.

"I was kind of looking forward to seeing those guys again," said Gary Loyst, who recalled a display from last years Expo that featured tables stacked with swords, daggers, maces and war hammers. "I'd never seen weapons like that sold before."

    From a GW forum

I can confirm that Games Workshop and Andy Chambers have decided to part company. For reasons I'm sure you can appreciate, we never discuss employees personal details or situations, so I cant provide any more information than this. I'm going to lock this thread now, as it really is off-topic for this forum.
